Introduction from the Editorial Team

Any situation is heavily defined by leadership in whatever form it takes. With the Middle East and North Africa continuing to experience numerous challenges, we at Manara Magazine found it necessary to explore what the past, present, and future state of leadership in the region consists of.

We strove to put together an issue that seeks to show how leadership, or its absence, affects the lives of millions within and beyond national borders. Articles range from high politics in chancelleries in various capitals to the reality on the ground. Our writers hail from across the globe and include academics, former diplomats, researchers, and students with diverse backgrounds and experiences. Similarly, the topics featured cover challenges from Algeria in the West to Iraq in the East, alongside decision-making in Washington and Beijing.

Our writers hail from across the globe and include academics, former diplomats, researchers, and students with diverse backgrounds and experiences.

Rather than constraining ourselves to analysing purely formal structures of leadership, we sought to include articles that examine informal ones, such as popular movements, as well as the challenges they face, e.g. dilemmas confronted by rebel leaders. By examining the social, political, and strategic components of leadership, we hope this issue will both inform as well as provoke new questions
